about
When we went to Bulawayo to link up with local artists together with Symbiz from Berlin and in place of war (IPOW) in 2015, we met up with artists such as Syko Tek, Awa Khiwe and Djembe Monks. I also tried to get in touch with Cal Vin, a rapper I had written about his work on a song he did with South African star rapper Cassper Nyovest: "Z'khuphan". The song was a statement against xenophobic violence in South Africa, when Cassper came for a show to Zimbabwe he worked with Cal Vin to show solidarity. When we programmed the urban africa festival and academy back in Cologne in 2016, I asked Cal Vin if he would want join in. So he and Awa came together, already a weekend before the festival, to do an additional show at the african film festival in cologne and promote the coming workshops, events and performances. They did amazing performances and talks about ndebele rap meets kwaito and steet styles from Luveve to Makokoba. We had a great time while doing last preparations for the festival. After the shows in Germany, we had kept contact and while I started to work with Awa on her debut album together with Ghanaian Stallion we had also been talking to Cal Vin about possible future collaborations. Whenever I had asked Cal Vin since to work on a song, he got immediately back to me playing his first recordings. If it was for a song for DJ Densen's Lockdown riddim challenge, FARHOT's beat compilation on a beat by Ghanaian Stallion, that lead to "Motivation", a song that won the competition or a feature for Awa Khiwe's upcoming album. I will miss the excitement and his voice messages he used to send whenever we worked together.
It was tough waking up this morning reading a text-message from Awa, that Cal Vin had passed on. All thoughts are with his family and friends. I put together some footage from the festival to illustrate a remix Buddy (Symbiz) had worked on of Cal Vins song feat. Cassper Nyovest: "Z'khuphan". Feel free to share and support! All proceeds will go to his family. #RestInPeace #CalVin
